This Month's Birthstone - Garnet 

Garnet, the January birthstone, is thought to keep the wearer safe while travelling. The word "garnet" comes from the Latin granatus, which means "seed," since the gem resembles the colour and shape of a pomegranate seed. 

Necklaces studded with red garnets adorned the Egyptian pharaohs, while signet rings in ancient Rome included garnet intaglios used to stamp the wax that protected vital papers.
